NPCC 2 Wheel Operation
The National Police Chiefs’ Council’s (NPCC) 2Wheel Operation runs from the 2 – 15 June 2025.
The operation aims to improve road safety for cyclists and motorcyclists and reduce the number of casualties on the road.
At this time of year, there are often more cyclists on the road, so it’s important for drivers to be more aware of bikes. Look out when overtaking, at junctions, when turning right, and when joining the main road.
Remember: Look twice for bikes.
If you’re a cyclist, it’s equally important for you to know how to stay safe on the road. Cycling UK suggest 5 tips to help you stay safe while cycling:
- Check your surrounding before you get on the road. If possible, find a place where you’re easily visible to passing traffic as you enter the road.
- Road conditions can change rapidly, so make sure you can get to your breaks quickly and easily. Be familiar with your breaks and stopping distances.
- Maximise your awareness of your surroundings. Try to make eye contact with drivers before you perform manoeuvres. This will give you reassurance that they are aware of you.
- Make sure you’re at least an arm’s length from the curb while riding. Most road defects (like gullies, potholes and debris) occur at or near the curb, so this will help you avoid these hazards.
- It’s important to be predictable on the road so other users are aware of your road position. When you end your journey, check over your shoulder to make sure other road users are aware that you’re altering your default riding position.
