Just Passed

You are now in possession of a full driving licence – but remember you are on probation for the first two years due to the Road Traffic (New Drivers) Act, which came into force on the 1 June 1997.

THE ROAD TRAFFIC (NEW DRIVERS) ACT came into force on 1 June 1997. It applies to new drivers (and motorcyclists). The licence of any driver is revoked automatically if they reach a total of six or more valid penalty points within two years of passing their test. This includes any valid penalty points which may have been awarded before the test was passed. Penalty points are valid for three years.

As a young driver you are more at risk of being involved in a collision in those first two years and many collisions occur as a result of excess speed. Driving safely within the law is the key to a long and points free driving licence.

If you clock up six points or more on your licence during the first two years, you will lose your licence and go back to being a learner. This means that you will have to re-apply for a provisional licence and take both the theory and the practical test again. If this happens you should inform your insurance company immediately. Failing to do so could invalidate your insurance.

REMEMBER - Passing the test again does not remove the penalty points which remain on your licence until their three year period expires.
