On August 2nd GoSafe (Wales Road Casualty Reduction Partnership) will be running an all Wales high profile operation to tackle speeding motorists on the M4 corridor (from the second Severn Crossing to West Wales, the A470 and A5 from the English border to Holyhead, in a bid to improve road safety.
The operation is a pre-curser to the Tispol European Police thematic campaign which is centred around speed enforcement.
In 2010, 95 people were killed and 998 were seriously injured on the roads in Wales. These results show that sadly, there are a consistent number of motorists using local roads who put their lives, and the lives of others at risk.
There will be an increased presence on these routes and the speed limit will be enforced by GoSafe marked vehicles.
Jim Moore, Partnership Manager, GoSafe: "This operation is an attempt to improve road safety along these primary routes. I believe this is an excellent way to show law abiding motorists that we are seeking to improve road safety. We want drivers to enjoy Wales and stay safe not to be a statistic on our roads. Sadly there are still a number of deaths and injuries along the primary routes which are the busiest roads in Wales and we are working towards improving road safety”
The number of people killed or seriously injured on roads in Wales has fallen at camera sites with KSI casualties being reduced by 65.3% at fixed sites and 62.1% at mobile sites. We are reducing speeds to save lives not to make money.
The operation will continue throughout August. We are appealing to everyone to drive safely, drive to the road conditions, and abide by speed restrictions.
